Working with refugees and asylum seekers

Working with refugees and asylum seekers

SWVG Overview

SWVG is a group of approximately 60 volunteers. Many are trained visitors who befriend asylum seekers and refugees in the Southampton area.

  • Over 80% of our income goes to our clients. We pay for 20 hours per week administrative assistance; all the rest of the work is done by volunteers.
  • The ASSIST scheme provides some financial support to about 50 destitute asylum seekers each year.  We may pay for a basic room and provide a small amount for subsistence each week.
  • Our funds come from grants from charitable trusts, donations from individuals and organisations and income from events.
  • SWVG provides speakers for local churches and other groups, raising awareness of the lives of Asylum Seekers in the UK.
  • SWVG members join in campaigns on behalf of asylum seekers.
  • SWVG is a registered charity.
